Under the Sea Adventure

We made a splash in Week 1 of our summer camp with the exciting theme "Under the Sea!" From engaging academics to hands-on crafts life skills and CBT sessions, our little explorers dove deep into the magical world beneath the waves.

Academics

Students (campers) explored sea animals through reading, writing, and math-developing literacy, vocabulary, and critical thinking in fun, ocean-themed ways.

This week’s academic activities revolved around learning about ocean life. Campers explored the names and facts of sea creatures, focusing in-depth on sea animals.

They engaged in math games by matching numbers to sea animals and developed literacy skills through descriptive writing and sentence building. One highlight was learning the life cycle of a sea turtle, followed by drawing their own versions with creative expression.

Story Time

Engaging stories introduced hygiene & cleanliness and sparked imagination through underwater adventures and teamwork.

Through interactive storytelling sessions like “Exploring Under the Sea” and “Undersea Cleaning Spree,” our little campers not only built language and listening skills but also reflected on important themes like environmental responsibility, hygiene and cleanliness.

These stories provided a wonderful gateway into imaginative thinking and discussions on keeping our oceans clean.

Cooking Corner

Creative, hands-on cooking boosted independence and fine motor skills with fun recipes incorporating sea creature faces.

Campers tapped into their creativity and independence during cooking activities. They prepared sea creature-shaped toast and crafted pizza tortillas, combining fun and function. These hands-on experiences also supported fine motor development, sequencing, and basic kitchen safety.

Science Time

Simple, sensory-rich experiments helped campers explore water, movement, and the ocean’s wonders with curiosity and excitement.

Children brought the ocean indoors through sensory science experiments. They created their own "Ocean in a Bottle," exploring movement, layering, and cause-effect through water, oil, and small marine toys.

Another activity involved adding sea creatures into water, observing floating vs. sinking, and talking about marine habitats.

Our young scientists also explored the concept of solid vs. liquid through a sensory-rich sea-themed experiment using corn flour and water.

Using trays of corn flour and gradually adding blue-colored water, children created a fascinating slime-like substance -one that felt solid when pressed, but liquid when released.

This hands-on activity introduced them to non-Newtonian fluids in a playful and accessible way. We added mini plastic sea animals to the mixture, encouraging campers to squeeze, stir, and explore

Crafts and Creativity

Art activities brought the sea to life, building creativity, focus, and sensory expression through drawing and 3D projects.

Students expressed their creativity through ocean-themed art. They designed colorful underwater scenes, then worked on a collaborative project to build 3D sea floor boxes, using textures, paper elements, and imagination to recreate the ocean floor, boosting their sensory and visual-motor integration.

Life and Fine Motor Skills

Students practiced real-life routines like making the bed and brushing hair, building independence, responsibility, and self-care.

Tactile activities like bubble wrap crafts and hygiene routines supported hand strength, control, and coordination.

Building independence was a big focus this week. Kids learned how to make their own beds, brush their hair, and memorize emergency phone numbers, practical skills that build routine, structure, and personal responsibility, especially important for kids with developing executive functioning.

To strengthen hand muscles and coordination, we focused on tactile tasks like the bubble wrap starfish, which combined cutting, pressing, and decorating with sensory fun. An interactive handwashing activity emphasized the importance of hygiene while building precision and sequencing.

Movement and Regulation

Structured games encouraged spatial awareness, balance, and regulation through playful physical activity.

Physical regulation and body awareness were supported through the carpet tape square activity. Students practiced staying within the square while performing movements, improving balance, control, and spatial boundaries in a playful way.

CBT Sessions

Children learned to recognize emotions and practice calming strategies using the Zones of Regulation framework

Our emotional regulation focus this week introduced the Zones of Regulation, teaching children to recognize their feelings (blue, green, yellow, red zones) and practice calming techniques. Students learned how to self-regulate with visuals, movement, and breathing exercises.

Field Trip: Fakieh Aquarium

We ended our Under the Sea week with an unforgettable visit to Fakieh Aquarium, where the students experienced the magic of marine life in real time!

Children walked through the aquarium with wide-eyed wonder as they spotted colorful tropical fish, graceful stingrays, and even the same sea turtles and starfish they had learned about all week. It was a moment of real-world connection, reinforcing everything they’d explored through academics, stories, and art.

The highlight of the day? The dolphin show! Campers were amazed as dolphins leaped, spun, and performed with their trainers - an exciting experience that sparked joy, laughter, and a deepened appreciation for sea creatures.

Wrapping-Up Week 1!

Our first week was truly a deep dive into learning, laughter, and discovery. From exploring sea creatures and creating slime oceans to learning life skills and calming our minds, our students embraced every moment with curiosity and joy. Watching their excitement at the aquarium, recognizing the animals they’d studied, was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.
